Book Summary of Computer Models in Environmental Planning by Steven I. Gordon
Citation:
Computer Models in Environmental Planning, Steven I.Gordon, New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, 1985), 217 pp.
This Book Summary written by: T.A. O'Lonergan, Conflict Research Consortium
Computer Models in Environmental Planning will be of interest to
those who seek an understanding of the use of models in the decision-making
process. The book begins with an overview of models in environmental
planning. Chapter two examines water quality models which are
applicable to both point and non-point sources of pollution.
The Streeter-Phelps models for dissolved oxygen modeling in
rivers is discussed prefatory to discussion of a statistical
approach to the same modeling. The author also addresses water quality
models which are embedded in other modeling efforts. The third chapter focuses
on storm-water runoff models with theoretical considerations of the hydrologic
cycle and descriptions of these models.
The fourth chapter is concerned with air pollution models.
Following a brief introduction to the topic and consideration of theoretical
aspects, the author addresses: the principal models, descriptions of relevant
computer models, and examples of modeling. The penultimate chapter examines
land capability evaluations, beginning with a history of capability
analysis, and concluding with the issues and problems associated with automated
land capability classification. The final chapter focuses on hazardous
waste. The author examines the intertwined entry paths for hazardous
wastes and concludes with a review of models. The text is appended with an
examination of technical transfer problems and a classified bibliography
which will be most useful to the reader who wishes to pursue particular topics
in greater detail.
Computer Models in Environmental Planning offers an introductory
examination of the role of modeling for environmental planning. The figure,
maps and tables nicely support the well written text.

Intractable Conflict Knowledge Base Project "This knowledge base examines very difficult, destructive, long-lasting conflicts. We explore what makes these conflicts different from other conflicts, and more importantly what can be done to lessen their destructiveness and make them more constructive." |
